DHL Supply Chain is significantly expanding its presence in Leipzig/Halle, Germany, with the construction of a new state-of-the-art logistics center. The new facility will offer 34,000 square meters of space and accommodate up to 55,000 pallets, significantly boosting DHL's logistics capabilities in the region. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
The new center is strategically located next to an existing DHL warehouse serving a leading electronics manufacturer and close to another DHL facility in Leipzig. This prime location provides excellent multimodal connections, with access to the DHL parcel and express network, major rail and highway systems, and the Leipzig/Halle cargo airport, which is the largest hub within the DHL Express global network. This comprehensive connectivity allows DHL to offer customers efficient logistics solutions not just within Germany, but throughout Europe and across the globe.
The new center caters to a wide range of clients, with a focus on technology companies and various industries. Aiste Slabokaite Heid, Business Unit Director North-East at DHL Supply Chain, highlights the company's commitment to providing end-to-end logistics solutions, from warehousing and picking to value-added services. Close collaboration with clients is emphasized as a key factor for success. The expansion will also allow DHL to support the growth of existing customers on the Leipzig/Halle campus.
This project aligns with DHL's strategic growth objectives. According to Rainer Haag, Chief Executive Officer of DHL Supply Chain Germany & Alps, the new facility will significantly enhance DHL's logistics capacity in the region and empower them to support customer growth across Germany, Europe, and internationally.
Sustainability is a key priority for DHL, and the new facility reflects this commitment. The building is designed to meet the Gold certification standards of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). It will be a carbon-neutral operation, powered by a 1,000-kilowatt peak photovoltaic system and featuring energy-efficient technologies like air heat pumps, specially sealed doors, LED lighting, and a solar thermal hot water system.
This focus on sustainability aligns with DHL Group's broader goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 10 million metric tons by 2030. Their commitment encompasses multiple initiatives, including fleet electrification, zero-emission operations, and investment in sustainable fuels across all transport modes.
The expansion is welcomed by local authorities. Dr. Judith Marquardt, Deputy Mayor for Culture and Sport for the City of Halle (Saale), acknowledges the Star Park industrial park's role in attracting leading companies like DHL. The city's renewed investment in the park's infrastructure further underscores the importance of logistics for the region's future growth and job creation. Dr. Marquardt welcomes DHL as a partner and celebrates the expansion of the Leipzig/Halle Campus.
Overall, the new logistics center marks a significant development for DHL Supply Chain in Leipzig/Halle. It enhances their capacity, strengthens their service offerings, and demonstrates their commitment to sustainability, positioning them for continued growth while contributing positively to the local economy.
