On the evening of October 5, 2023, Wan Hai A07 was sailing from the East Coast of the United States to the Suez Canal when it received a distress call from a sailboat approximately 400 nautical miles west of Gibraltar. The sailboat had suffered damage to its keel and was in danger of capsizing. The sole occupant of the sailboat, a French national, activated the on-board AIS distress beacon and was found approximately 50 nautical miles south of the sailboat.
Wan Hai A07 immediately altered course to respond to the distress call. The crew worked tirelessly to reach the sailboat as quickly as possible. The crew quickly rescued the individual and brought them aboard Wan Hai A07.
The rescued individual was in relatively good health, but they were suffering from exposure and dehydration. The crew of Wan Hai A07 contacted the Spanish Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) to coordinate the next steps in the rescue operation.
The MRCC dispatched a patrol boat to Wan Hai A07's location. The patrol boat arrived the following morning and took the rescued individual to safety.
Wan Hai A07's rescue operation was a success because of the quick thinking and decisive action of the crew. They put the safety of the French national ahead of their own and ensured that they were rescued safely.
