I read recently that one of the top three multi-national forwarders had come up with a new concept for its customers - wait for it - running ocean groupage / part loads from Hong Kong and China to the USA and Europe. That’s what many of us have been doing for decades!!! Talk about reinventing the paddle! Our China operations are handling consolidations on a weekly basis from six ports into our four US and three UK facilities, but our business is about a lot more than that. It is the IT infrastructure we can offer, including online PO monitoring, stock control on the mainland and shipping in accordance with your customers’ demands. So we become your floating warehouse, offering speedier UK landside turnaround; hence faster invoicing and prompter settlement.

At the BEA we were asked continually what is going on regarding freight. Well it depends what hour of what day that question was asked! From a steamship line perspective the lines have withdrawn vessels to ‘create a demand’ and there has been mooting of increases and for the third quarter a ‘peak season surcharge’. At this point nothing justifies these soundings from the lines, but the noises are there. Airfreight is still weak and many carriers are still reducing capacity on the summer schedules compared to last year. Everyone is looking for savings. We have the pre-sailing rework of stock opportunity, transit savings, probably cost savings, a free IT platform and we haven’t reinvented the paddle - we just know what makes sense in the present climate without over-hyping an old idea.
Amongst our Multinational freight competitors we are seeing many crashing into publishing, trying to fill a void left by the downturn in the automotive industry. Anything that helps their revenue streams and fills their leased but empty warehouses before another swath of employees are let go as the noose gets tighter. A biased view maybe. Wait until someone spots a shoot, green or otherwise, and they will move onto the next corporate idea.
