International freight forwarder, Advance International Transport is playing a significant role in efforts to reduce potentially harmful emissions from one of Europe’s dirtiest electricity generating plants.
Mitsui/IHI is refurbishing the Maritsa East 2 Thermal power station at Stara Zagora in Bulgaria.
The plant is being equipped with special technology that cleans the exhaust smoke emitted from the burning of coal with high sulphur content. In its role as project forwarding manager for the refurbishment programme, Advance International has transported a number of radioactive devices from Germany to Bulgaria. These will be used to measure and monitor the emission abatement technology, which is being installed as part of the refurbishment to bring sulphur dioxide (SOx) emissions within IMO agreed limits.
Advance International President & CEO, Mr Jawad Kamel says: “As IMO Class 7 consignments, many forwarders are unwilling or unable to accept this type of shipment because of the many challenges that it presents. We were able to undertake this move as we have the experience, the skills, and, most importantly, the requisite certificates.”
Advance International arranged for the shipments to move by air from Germany to Bulgaria, where the on-carriage to the power station was managed by the company’s regional subsidiary AIT Balkan, which has the appropriate licences to transport radioactive equipment.
Adds Mr Kamel, “Gathering all supporting documents to obtain the requisite export and import licences for the shipments was quite a challenge in itself.
“Advance International is fully-equipped with technicians and managers who are experts in this type of transport. They are fully trained in all aspects of heath and safety regulations and can easily plan safe and timely movements by sea, air, land and rail within Europe, the CIS and Russia as well as globally to any destination.
“I believe that there are few forwarders that are willing and truly able to handle these types of consignment. Advance International invites any shipper with IMO Class 7 cargoes, or similar, to consider ourselves when they next have to route a consignment from one country to another, or even as a domestic shipment.”
