Leading supply chain provider, Wincanton, has secured a five year contract with leading pet food company, Nestlé Purina PetCare, to manage its Specialist Packing Unit. The contract will see Wincanton manage high volumes of production out of a 150,000 sq. ft. site in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, utilising some of the most advanced packing technology.
Robotic pickers and palletisers are utilised to pack the various product lines into multi-packs ahead of their delivery to some of the UK’s largest retailers.
As part of the contract, Wincanton will store base product and export finished goods from a satellite store in Wisbech. This store also manages the storage of dry raw materials for Nestlé Purina’s own manufacturing operation.
The award of the contract will also create synergies with Wincanton’s existing relationship with Nestlé Purina. Wincanton has managed the National Distribution Centre for the pet food manufacturer for the last seven years from its Hams Hill site in Coleshill, Birmingham.
Patrick Sullivan, co-packing contract manager, Nestlé Purina, said: “The nature of our product means that we need to have total confidence that our products are picked, wrapped and packed intelligently. Wincanton has demonstrated that its co-packing operation can fulfil this need and significantly improve efficiencies in our supply chain. The fact that we have enjoyed a strong relationship through the management our national distribution centre meant it was a straightforward decision to award the contract to Wincanton.”
Jeff Anderson, managing director, Wincanton, commented: “To be awarded this contract by the UK’s leading supplier of pet food, and the owner of some of the UK’s most well-recognised brands, is testament to Wincanton’s credentials. More and more of our customers are enjoying the benefits of the value added services we offer and we are delighted to continue to grow our existing relationship with Nestle Purina.”
