Davies Turner Air Cargo Ltd (DTAC), the air cargo arm of Davies Turner Plc, the UK’s leading independent freight forwarder, international logistics and transport company, is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a hat-trick that sets up the operation for its third decade of successful trading.
Just weeks before the 20th anniversary of its July 1990 founding, Davies Turner Air Cargo is enjoying a triple success with its re-accreditation to the prestigious Investors in People standard (IIP) as well as ISO 9001 2008 quality assurance along with HM Revenue and Customs completing the audit and revalidation of its status as a fully Authorised Economic Operator (AEO).
These three awards recognise the large number of people-based initiatives, Customs compliance and best practice operated by Davies Turner Air Cargo according to the company’s Managing Director, Denham Baxter.
“I am delighted that we have retained the Investors in People standard. This reflects the hard work that all staff put in to ensure our internal processes for the development and management of people meet the required standards.
“I place great importance upon our IIP status, because it sends an important message to staff that they are valued and we aspire to continually improve our organisation. This is something that does not go unnoticed by the outside world."
Davies Turner Air Cargo became one of the first AEO-accredited companies anywhere in the European Union when it received full accreditation in April 2008.
Mr Baxter added: “Revalidation as an AEO reflects our continuing improvement in maintaining supply chain security and customs compliance as well as our financial strength and robust systems.”
As well as the achievement of AEO accreditation before its competitors, Davies Turner Air Cargo has during a busy two decades been somewhat of a pioneer for the UK airfreight forwarding sector. The company was one of the first to become a Designated Export Place for NES and became a pace setter in the Airfreight Minimum Security Standards Scheme (AIMSS) established by London’s Metropolitan Police.
Since its founding in 1990, Davies Turner Air Cargo has acquired unrivalled experience in a range of sophisticated trades, satisfying some of the most demanding clientele in the freight industry. The company has recently built up additional specialist services in aviation parts logistics, fine wine exports and aquatics/transport of live fish, as well as film and media work.
Davies Turner Air Cargo is currently working on obtaining ISO 14001:2004 accreditation, the internationally recognised audit of a company’s green credentials. Baxter says that this environmental qualification is increasingly expected by customers and the requirement is becoming more prevalent in bids, especially in the aviation sector.
Baxter says: “When we founded Davies Turner Air Cargo, Mrs Thatcher was Prime Minister and it was a very different business environment. One thing that has changed since then is the concern many stakeholders in the global supply chain have over green issues and transport’s carbon footprint. We were only beginning to think of it then, but now we have such concerns very much in the forefront of our business decisions.
“Davies Turner Air Cargo is determined that now and in the future, the carbon impression left by our activities will be as small as possible.”
Summing up the first 20 years of Davies Turner Air Cargo activity, Mr Baxter is confident that the company will continue to serve UK plc’s importers and exporters far into the future. Earlier this year the overland, ocean and logistics divisions within the Davies Turner Group – established in 1870 - celebrated their own 140th. Anniversary.
Baxter says: “Davies Turner Air Cargo will play our part in the country’s economic recovery by ensuring the timely and cost-efficient delivery of UK products to and from markets worldwide.
“This is what we have been doing for the last 20 years and we have every intention of continuing to do so for at least another 20 years and beyond.”
