The Icelandic volcano that grounded much of Europe’s airfreight could not have come at a more critical time for Davies Turner, the UK and Ireland’s leading independent freight services provider, as it planned deliveries for this year’s Tehran International Book Fair (TIBF).
The multimodal forwarder uses a mix of road and airfreight each year to move books from British, European and many other publishers to the TIBF, known to the international publishing world as the most important publishing event in Asia and the Middle East. Held since 1987, the event attracts some 1,400 foreign publishers from 75 countries who put on display some 150,000 titles.
Comments Philip Stephenson, Joint Managing Director of Davies Turner: “This year we quickly realised that we had to switch from our planned use of air cargo to road freight for the final deliveries of books and supporting materials to the TIBF as a result of the sudden airspace shutdown and closure of many airports in the UK and much of Northern Europe.
“We had to utilise more express trailers this year and the switch to road also meant that we set another record for overland shipments to the event with transit times from the UK to Tehran as short as 7–10 days.
“The silver lining for our trailer department in the reduction of air cargo was a corresponding increase in the tonnage moved by road. This year we broke last year’s record for the TIBF, by moving 373.1 tonnes, almost 70 tonnes more this time.”
Since the TIBF’s founding, Davies Turner has handled the delivery of books and publications to the event on behalf of many British and international publishing companies appearing at the Fair.
Concludes Mr Stephenson: “Two years ago we celebrated the milestone of serving the 21st Tehran International Book Fair. We have supported the fair every year since its launch and we were determined that the ash cloud would not ground our efforts in taking UK exports and associated exhibits to the fair. I am proud we were able to step up to the plate and not let our customers down”.
“The increase in books moved this year represents a significant increase in tonnages moved but, equally importantly, demonstrates publishers’ continuing satisfaction with what Davies Turner can offer to supply this major publishing event and to provide destination services which ensure books reach the exhibition stands on time.”
Davies Turner has a long-established presence in Iran, having served British and other exporters to this important market for 50 years. The group has also maintained its own representative office in the country for 42 years.
