* Direct flight significantly shortens Transit Time from Hong Kong to Surabaya
* New flight also connects Surabaya directly with North Asia and US
Singapore, December 9, 2009 — DHL, the world’s leading express company, announced today that it is the first express company to start a direct flight from Hong Kong to Surabaya to facilitate the increasing number of import cargo from Hong Kong to East Java. The flight operates four days a week, every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday and will not only carry freight from Hong Kong, but also North Asia and US origins.
According to the latest data of the Central Bureau of Statistics of East Java, compared to September 2009, there is an increased amount of import by 7.84% in October 2009, amounting to US$970.15 million. Meanwhile, shipment volumes on DHL’s Hong Kong – Surabaya routes have been increasing and DHL recorded an 18% growth between July and November 2009. Major shipments were from China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. The direct flight from Hong Kong International Airport to Djuanda Airport in Surabaya provides customers with a faster transit time (TT) of up to 24 hours compared to the previous non-direct flight by alleviating the need for clearance in Jakarta and domestic transportation from Jakarta to Surabaya.
“Hong Kong - Surabaya is an important trade lane for DHL because China is the largest supplier of non-oil and gas products to East Java, with the value amounting to US$202.62 million in October 2009. Based on Central Statistic Bureau of East Java DHL also has a gateway in Surabaya for shipments from/to all regions in East Java. Through a shorter transit time offered by the direct flight, DHL can better support the Surabaya-based companies to enhance their import activities,” said David Ng, Senior Technical Advisor, DHL Express/PT Birotika Semesta. “With this new flight, we expect to be able to significantly enhance connectivity, service reliability and on-time performance for our customers in the East Java, Hong Kong, North Asia and US.”
“Even during these challenging economic times, DHL Express in Indonesia continues to support Indonesian importers and exporters through various solutions. We are committed to providing best-in-class express and logistic solutions, as well as in-depth trade, customs and excise knowledge of the major world markets,” he added.
Surabaya is not only a gateway to the resource-rich provinces of eastern Indonesia but also a major manufacturing hub in its own right and an active importer of bicycle parts, computer parts, electronic materials, garment, leather, papers, spare-parts, textiles, and other industrial supplies. As a trade facilitator, DHL Express can also support Indonesian importers and exporters with a range of tailored logistics solutions such as the DHL IMPORT EXPRESS WORLDWIDE, DHL’s simple and convenient door-to-door express delivery solution through a single point of contact and one invoice in a single currency. Therefore, the Hong Kong – Surabaya direct flight with a shorter transit time will help customers improve competitiveness and increase efficiency.
“DHL Express believes there is a significant growth potential in East Java and the direct flight service reflects DHL’s commitment to working with and supporting the business community to realize the region’s full business potential,” David Ng added.
