SEB Group is already using Ahlers Logistics' new storage facility
Ahlers Logistics has just opened its third warehouse in St. Petersburg (Russia). The “Gamma” warehouse' comes with a 17,500 m² surface area, offering storage room for 37,500 pallets carrying consumer goods and DIY (do-it –yourself) products. SEB Group is the first customer to use the ‘narrow corridor' shelf racks of the new warehouse that is located in the Gorelovo industrial estate in St. Petersburg. Total investment for the warehouse amounts to 15 million euros. In the meantime, total storage capacity of the Ahlers Logistics Centre (consisting of three warehouses in total) covers around 70,000 pallet equivalents.
Gamma is the third newly built warehouse and was purpose-designed for the storage and handling of consumer goods. Vertical clearance is 12 metres. Ahlers Logistics decided on a narrow corridor system, which allows up to 40% more goods to be stacked using the same amount of space. This newly built project is in line with the master plan for the site which covers a total 200,000 m² surface area.
JIT – Just in Time (of 365)
To the day, the building was constructed and finished in 365 days, according to contract specifications. Stefan Van Doorslaer, Ahlers Russia General Manager, says: “As we were keen to guarantee our customers an availability date, we also encouraged all our contractors (for the construction operations as well as for IT) to observe the strict timing schedule. Something we managed to pull off. Admittedly, things got a bit tight at times, but the weather gods have been clement and collaboration with the contractors went smooth-paced.”
By the same token, the transfer of the SEB products to the new warehouse also served as a further test for the WMS (warehouse management system), producing a positive result. This WMS was designed in-house and is used to steer operations using RF scanning.
Ahlers has been operating in Russia since 1993 in dispatching and customs clearance (Ahlers Forwarding) and as an agent (Ahlers Agencies). Since 2005, Ahlers Logistics too has been operating in Russia in the field of contract logistics, running its own warehouses. In Russia, Stefan Van Doorslaer heads up a 200-strong team working across 2 locations. For Ahlers Logistics, the ALC has been the most significant investment to date. In addition, the company also runs warehouses in Ghent-Evergem (Belgium); Kharkov and Dniepropetrosk (Ukraine).
