Some big names in the Spanish haulage industry have decided to ship substantial volumes of their North European business on the Bilbao to Zeebrugge route.
Following the example of companies like Bridgestone, LKW Walter, Ewals Cargo Care and Heitrans this is a major breakthrough in the Spanish market. The famous Grupo TT and Chiné S.A. have both decided during the last weeks to start using Transfennica. On annual basis they represent 140,000 tonnes of cargo that is being shifted from road to sea.
Grupo TT is operating 250 units in national and international haulage. The company has shown a gradual and steady growth. Today the Benelux markets are an important activity, which can be served efficiently from Zeebrugge.
According to Mr Jose Manuel Barros, vice-president at El Ferrol based Grupo TT, the service is offering great benefits: “We have some 10 locations in Spain and Portugal where we combine cargo for destinations in Holland & Belgium. Using the Transfennica service gives us big opportunities to improve productivity of our trucks as they can stay in Spain. We are also having problems with driving times, fuel prices, permits, taxes, traffic jams and toll costs in France. On top of the savings and operational benefits the Transfennica service is better for the environment”.
Mrs Celia Chiné, manager of Transportes Chiné S.A. adds to the above: “Transfennica’s conro service is the perfect alternative to road. We have been in international transport for over 25 years and this is one of the most useful innovations that I have ever seen. It will also give us good opportunities to grow our company without having to invest in new tractor units. The productivity per truck increases so we only have to add trailers to the system.”
Mr Michael van den Heuvel, Director of Transfennica, explains his vision on the future: “In the past there where 4 sailings per day between Belgium and the UK. Today there are over 20. We believe the same will happen between Bilbao and Zeebrugge. Today we have 3 per week. I expect in a few years there will be 2
per day. It is cheaper, cleaner, more reliable and more efficient than road”.
Mr Ignacio Clavero, Commercial Director of Transfennica Bilbao, comments: “Step-by-step we are convincing Spanish transport companies about the true commercial opportunities and savings that can be achieved when using our service. We expect that many others will follow in the coming months”.
