Rail Freight in Europe – Challenges for sustainable development

Europoint, the international conference and exhibition organiser specialised in the rail sector, is pleased to announce an international conference and trade show on rail freight transport under the name Rail Freight in Europe. This international conference and trade show on freight transport will be held on 6 and 7 December in the Erasmus Expo and Congress Centre in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The importance of the Betuwe Route for freight transport between the Netherlands and the European hinterland has prompted the organisers to hold this event surrounding the inauguration of this new rail freight corridor. Rail Freight in Europe is the successor of the former event: Betuwe Route, Europe’s Rail Gateway for Feight. This event was originally scheduled for 6 and 7 March 2007, but had to be cancelled due the postponement of the inauguration of the Betuwe Route. The organisers are pleased that the postponement has now resulted in the event Rail Freight in Europe.

Rail Freight in Europe is being supported by the Dutch key stakeholders in this field, i.e. Port of Rotterdam, Port of Amsterdam, Rail Cargo Information Centre, Association of Freight Railway Undertakings, Holland International Distribution Council, Deltalinqs, ORAM, Dutch Logistics Association, Keyrail and Nieuwsblad Transport.

Press Release

Rail freight transport has expanded strongly in Europe over the last years. Under the right circumstances, transporting freight by train is highly economic and also more efficient than freight transport by road. More and more companies are looking for a more sustainable transport mode for their freight resulting in the rise in rail freight transport. In the Netherlands, for instance, rail freight has almost doubled in the last years. The Betuwe Route, the extensively debated new rail track of over 5 milliard Euros, connects the port of Rotterdam with the hinterland. The new railway line has come at the right time in order to facilitate additional market driven growth.

International conference and trade show

The purpose of this international conference and trade show is to discuss the market developments of European rail freight transport. All stakeholders involved are jointly capable of accomplishing a modal shift onto rail as one of the most sustainable developments. Top speakers from all over Europe will address this aspect extensively at the international conference.

The event offers an excellent opportunity to meet professionals from all over the world, to discuss current developments in this specialist field and for companies to establish a public image for a national and international audience of professionals.

The conference programme is being prepared by Europoint in cooperation with Mr. Auke Douma, an expert in this field. He has used his past 10-year experience in his position as former Managing Director of ‘Railforum Nederland’ to create a comprehensive programme.

Rail Freight in Europe will take place at the Erasmus Expo and Congress Centre in Rotterdam. This venue is within reach of public transport and major highways, with extensive facilities and outfitted with the latest technological equipment.
