Thamesport (London) received the longest ever vessel to call at the port on Sunday 6th April 2008. The Margrethe Maersk, at 367m long, 43.0m wide and 98,000 gross tonnage, is the first of six new, highly automated, additions to the Maersk fleet and entered the Maersk Line’s worldwide liner service in March 2008.
Chris Lewis, Chief Executive Officer of Hutchison Ports (UK) limited, which owns Thamesport (London), commented:

These vessels are at the industry forefront in fuel efficiency and implementation of environmentally friendly technologies. We are pleased to have had the opportunity to handle this highly automated ship at the UK’s only automated port.”
The Margrethe Maersk was designed and built to meet the highest demands for safe, economic and environmentally friendly transportation of goods across the globe. It includes, amongst other features; a recovery system enabling waste heat to be used for propulsion, which reduces fuel consumption by up to 10 percent, and advanced computer systems that improve the cargo, route and speed efficiency of every voyage.
The Margarethe Maersk will now call at Bremerhaven and Rotterdam, before returning to the UK to berth at the Port of Felixstowe, which is also owned by Hutchison Ports (UK) Limited.
