Logistics group targets renewable energy industry

Project cargo specialists, Project Professionals Group, will continue to market its oversize logistics capabilities to the growing renewable energy industry, particularly wind power, according to the group’s general manager Kevin Stephens.

Mr Stephens said today that PPG members TransGroup Worldwide Logistics and Rhenus Logistics had recently returned from the Windpower 2008 Conference & Exhibition in Houston, Texas, and had reported excellent feedback in regard to potential new business opportunities.

The three-day expo in early June was the largest of its kind and brought together more than 12,000 wind industry leaders, policymakers and energy professionals and featured over 770 exhibitors.

Mr Stephens said it was clear that expansion in renewable energy, particularly in North America, would create opportunities for the PPG to deliver supply chain solutions for wind power plant developers, and turbine manufacturers.

“Windpower 2008 was an excellent opportunity for PPG members to promote our global footprint and specialised skills used to ensure the successful delivery of project cargo,” Mr Stephens said.

“As a result of the interest that PPG representatives received we are very confident of providing further logistics support and forging new relationships within the renewable energy sector.”

Last year TransGroup, who were an exhibitor at Windpower 2008, successfully transport 50 wind turbines (150 blades, 50 nacelles, 50 hubs, 50 towers) with each blade measuring 47.5 meters long and weighing more than 14 tonnes from Santos in Brazil to the Port of Oswego on Lake Ontario, New York State. The massive logistics project was made up of more than 750 loads, of which more than 600 were oversized.

Rhenus Logistics used two project vessels to deliver 35 blades and 25 blades respectively of 40 meters from Duluth (USA) to Bilbao (Spain) last August. The blades were successfully delivered to different windparks in Spain.
